New network not seeing others in workgroup

I have two computers running Windows XP Home edition. I recently was able to get DSL, so I decided to network the computers and share the connection. I have both PCs on a wired network now, and the DSL connection works fine on both machines. My problem is that I can't "find" the other computer in my workgroup to set up folder shares. Both have been set up to use the workgroup HOME, but only one of the two computers actually even lists itself under HOME when I view my network area. I can search for computers on the network, and not even my own computer comes up on one machine... the other machine lists only itself. I've tried using the run command and accessing a shared folder directly, like..
//computer_name/shared_folder_nam
It works fine if it's on the local machine, but if it's on the other computer it says the folder does not exist.

I suspect it may have something to do with not having all of my networking components installed in Windows XP, but I really don't know what I need. I've worked a lot with networks in the past, but everything I've done has been through Windows 2000 with the Users and Groups snap-in from the MMC. That's not available in XP Home. Will I need to upgrade to Professional just to do the file sharing

Thanks for your help, I cannot really find anything specifically about this for XP Home edition anywhere -- especially since the DSL connection is working fine on both machines

L.S.,

Well I am using XP Professional but I believe that this is not necessary in
your case.

There are a number of steps to take when you want to share resources on an
XP computer. First set up a home or small office network with the well-known
wizard. I assume that´s already been done. Next, allow connections to this
computer, via Control Panel / System / Remote tab. If that´s been done, go
to the second computer and open "My Network Places". Start the "view
workgroup computers" wizard from the left pane. If the first computer is not
visible, then sometimes the following procedure will help. In that same
windows, called "Workgroup" go up one level (third button, after back and
forward). This should bring you to the "Micorosoft Windows network" level,
where all available workgroups are shown. Double-click the "HOME" icon and
the first computer may show up. If it´s not, then you may also try to
connect to it using \\comp1 in the adress bar, where "comp1" should be
replaces with the actual NETBIOS name of the first computer.

Have you checked the network connections and installed the Netbios
protocol?
