A new file just appeared on my hard drive. (Maybe it has
been there before, somewhere else; in any case I just
discovered it.) Its name is:

401accd9293d12eaf4

Does this mean anything to anyone here? Should I worry
about this? Any insight appreciated. Thanks.

Temporary folder from an update most likely.

I opened the file in Notepad (which lists it as
"msxml4-KB927978-enu.log") and the first several lines seem
to support what you say. They read:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

=== Verbose logging started: 11.17.2006 9:43:42 Build
type: SHIP UNICODE 3.01.4000.2435 Calling process:
C:\WINNT\system32\msiexec.exe ===
MSI (c) (64:8C) [09:43:42:311]: Resetting cached policy
values
MSI (c) (64:8C) [09:43:42:311]: Machine policy value 'Debug'

MSI (c) (64:8C) [09:43:42:311]: ******* RunEngine:

******* Action:
******* CommandLine: **********
MSI (c) (64:8C) [09:43:42:321]: Client-side and UI is none
or basic: Running entire install on the server.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Does that provide any more useful information? What are the
risks of deleting this 235 KB file?

It's a log file from the update. Flush it if it doesn't interest you,
read it, if it does. :-)
