New movie won't save

I have created simple movies by using pictures, clipart and such to create a
movie. For the first time I am trying to create a movie using video. I import
a movie from a website that is unprotected and in .wmv format. I try to
create a new movie by using only a portion of the imported video. The
selected clips can be put on the timeline and play just fine. The problem is
when I try to save the new video to my computer. The save dialogue opens and
within about a minute gets to 95% and then stops and goes no further. It
continues to say that it is saving and the Task Manager indicates that it is
running. But it never completes the save. I even let it go for 12 hours on
one try. The same result happens when trying to save to a CD except that the
process stops at 55%. This has been the same result on three different
computers using XP Pro and XP. What is the problem? Can movies not be made
from downloaded videos imported into Movie Maker?

Maybe the following articles will offer some ideas:

Have you tried saving as .wmv and .avi?

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Tick...'Best Quality For My Computer'
Next/
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

To save as an .avi movie file...
(and several other options)
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Show More Choices /
Other Settings /
Open the drop window and choose...DV-AVI /
Next /
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

John,

I have two students that experienced similar, but not identical problems
saving their short MM 2 movie files in class the other night. In their case a
message popped up saying they did not have sufficient space on their laptops
(both running Win XP). A cursory look showed that they had at least 20 GB HD
space. I did not get a chance to check to see if their HD needed
defragmentation, but I suspect that with that type of free space, that would
probably not be the problem. In both cases, the video was less than 5 minutes.

I have downloaded the articles you referenced, but have not had a chance to
study them yet.

Do you have any other ideas regarding the problem on these laptops?

TIA

Incompatible source files is the usual suspect.

Thank you, John. I am somewhat surprised, since MM 2 was playing the preview
fine. I now need to study your links.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Playing a file and saving it successfully
is two different things.

I did not realize that. I did receive word back from one of the students. She
removed one of her video files, and MM 2 was able to render her movie. Thanks
for the insight and help.
