Hello

I've recently installed a new mouse, MS Intellimouse 4000, which works fine
but when I try to look at the properties and settings menu I get the
following message.

An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,
control_RunDLL "C:\windows\system32\main.cpl,mouse"

I really have no idea where to start but I have run sfc /scannow and tried
"run main.cpl" but no change.

If any member of this NG can help or suggest where to look for an answer I
would me very grateful.

Regards

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gerry

I've had a look at the errors reported in Event Viewer but there are only a
couple and they do not relate to the mouse menu problem. Just timeouts and
one referring to the ADSL Modem which does not cause any problems.

I was hoping that there was a stock remedy since I'm finding that how XP
actually works is outside of my capability. Nevertheless I will work through
your helpful suggestions and try to prepare a more adequate post.

Thank you Yves,

Installed Ver. 5.5 and up popped the mouse menu.

I am delighted and can now get on with using rather than trouble shooting.

Best regards
