1.had problems with everything freezing ... keyboard,
mouse, etc. .. had to use the reboot button or power down.
2.after a new hard drive and numerous re-installations of
windows xp ... have concluded that there is an
intermittant motherboard problem.
3.wish to install a new motherboard.
4.can i just attach my hard drive with windows and many
applications and settings to the new motherboard?
5.will it find the new hardware (including the cpu
itself) and keep all my prior (and painfully established)
information?
6.if not .. what is the easiest approach to take?

Hi

Yes, all you need to do is to perform a repair installation of XP
Note: NOT clean instal
Boot from the XP CD, press Enter key to enter setup
Then press the F8 key to accept the license agreement
Select the "R" key to perform a repair install
After all, you need to update windows patches and install SP1(if it is not include in the XP CD)

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming either a retail license or a generic
(non-branded) OEM license, unless the new motherboard is virtually
identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same
BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will probably also require re-activation. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.
