I'm planning on installing a new motherboard and want to
simply connect the hard drive I have now (Windows XP Home
Edition) up to it. I'm hearing horror stories about XP not
being able to recognize my new board once I boot up.
What do I have to do to make this painless?

Normally, assuming a retail license, unless the new motherboard is
virtually identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE
controllers, same BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair
(a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the very least:

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will probably also require re-activation. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

Hi, also you will need to re-install any patches and service packs....

I guess I should have mentioned that XP cam preinstalled
on my system (Local Vender not listed on the MS Pages)
I do have the XP CD though.
Will having a pre-loaded version make any difference in
the listed procedures?
Also, if I do have to call Microsoft to Reactivate, where
do I get their phone number? I've tried surfing around
this website to no avail.
Thanks a lot for the assist.

With an OEM version, it's hard to say what will happen if the new
motherboard isn't from the same supplier. You may be able to do a
repair installation, or you may not. Ask the PC's manufacturer
_before_ proceeding.
