Do a Repair Install of your Windows XP as per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

That will preserve your installed applications, configuration settings
and user data files. However Windows Updates will have have to be
reinstalled.

NOTE:::::
If your Windows XP is on a "system recovery" CD you may not be able to
do to a repair install. You may have to let the "system recovery" CD
do its dastardly deed, which will wipe out all of your installed
applications and user data files.

Good luck
