New Motherboard reccommendation

I have been away from building computers now for about a year,
virtually an eternity in computer time. So I haven't kept up with the
lastest advances. I am going to put together a system, and I was
considering the P4, (not the highest end, but something that has been
out for a little while). I need to get a reccommendation for what
motherboard to get. I can't afford the real high end expensive stuff,
but I would appreciate any advise. Also, memory is another factor, I
would like to get the best performance that I can afford.

Thanks, any help would really be appreciated!

Support for it exists with WinXP SP1.

| All the 800MHz FSB stuff is still relatively new, of course. If you
wanted to
| drop back to the Intel 845 series chipset with support for 533MHz FSB and
DDR
| 333 (PC2700) RAM, you'd save a little money without sacrificing a lot in
the way
| of performance. But I'd lean toward the newer chipsets with
hyper-threading
| support. That's not a big deal yet, but it soon will be. The rumor is
| Microsoft has XP support for hyper-threading in beta now and will make it
| available in SP2 or maybe even sooner.

I wasn't aware of that. Then wonder what the hyper-threading angle currently in
beta is?

You can search www.newegg.com for motherboards that fit your criteria,
e.g. number of slots, processor type, and chipset. Then you can sort
the results with respect to 'votes' (i.e. number of votes) to find the
most-reviewed models. Even if the reviews are censored, at least you
find the most popular models.

Here's a link on which OSes support it. The page lists Windows XP and some
Linux:

This is a great combo:

Biostar nForce2 M7NCG (GeForce4 MX, Lan, optical audio, AGP slot) $104
AMD XP1700 T'bred B core $44
2 sticks of CRUCIAL 256MB PC 2700 (for dual channel mode) $88
Dynatron DC1206BM-L610 HSF $11
EVERCASE E4252-ABV MID-TOWER CASE w/ 300W $53
Samsung SW-252BEN 52x24x52 $41
LITE-ON XJ-HD166S/XJ-HD165H 16X DVD ROM Drive - Retail $36
WD 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE $89
PANASONIC FLOPPY DISK DRIVE $11

TOTAL: a whopping $477 shipped free from Newegg!

This is a mATX board but works best in this full size case cuz you get extra
PCI openings for the extra USB and optical video outputs. CPU will run at
166(333)x12.5=2075MHz equaling a P4 2.6GHz http://www.cpudatabase.com/CPUdb/
Newegg seems now to be shipping B cores, which is what you want. Mobo has
onboard firewire but they don't seem to be shipping the back plate.

For some real fun, put the whole thing in a $45 (shipped) INWIN MINI TOWER
IW-L545P along with a DVD/CD-RW combo drive or DVD-R drive. I built one an
it is so cool...very small and cute, everyhing fits like a glove. Good air
flow. Be sure to use the Dynatron HSF cuz it's low profile and the very edge
overlaps the CD drive a bit.

You can save a some money by buying your memory, CD-RW and HDD locally with
rebates www.salescircular.com
