New Motherboard Problems in XP

Hi folks,

I wonder if you may be able to advise me.

I've just put a new motherboard in a PC of a friend (same everything else as
before - only the motherboard is new!).

When I've rebooted, XP won't fire up - it keeps throwing me back to the
'safe boot' screen (which also doesn't work!) - I seem to be having a
problem with the mup.sys file (obviously caused by the motherboard issue!).

I want to get his PC up and running for him by the morning, and I've read
that I need his Windows XP Home Edition CD to do a repair - this is the
problem as I haven't got it on me - it is with him. I do have my copy of
Windows XP Pro - can I somehow use this to sort his machine out!

Any pointers would really be appreciated!

Cheers

Lee

perhaps you could boot up with your xp pro cd..create a new partition and
install xppro there..then boot from this partition..
Probaly most of his programs will not work correctly but it will show the
system is up and running..sometimes mobo swaps just dont work for
windows..recently i tried a via-->nforce chipset mobo swap with xppro and
had to reinstall windows.

Do you still have the old board? Put it back, boot, remove all the
drivers that have anything to do with the motherboard, power off,
replace board, boot up and cross your fingers!

Unfortunately you really do need to get his XP Home copy and do a repair
install :-)

Do you have a folder on the none working system called I386?
Or one containing all the .cab files and setup.exe?
Boot to Safemode and check.

Read here,
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20724660.html

So you can retrieve the product key.
Download the program on your working system.
Boot to none working system/Safemode and install the program(Copy to a
floppy as it's small enough).
Get product key and then run the setup.exe off the none working one in
Safemode.
also read here on how to do a repair,
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
You may even just get away with a,"Last good known Config" repair.
If you have the above etc burn that folder to a CDR disk.

HTH :)

PS
Also whilst working disable the silly XP restart option.
My computer/Right click/Properties/Advanced/Startup and
recovery/Settings.
This may allow you to get to a normal windows session and fix the
Device Manager/drivers problem which it what I suspect you have. You
can also look for updated mother board drivers unless you have the MB
driver's disk which you can then use to install them.
HTH :)
