New Motherboard --> Both DVD drives hang on write

I recently upgraded an XPSP2 system from an Intel DG965WH to
to an Intel D975XBX2, using the procedure described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125

The upgrade worked flawlessly, EXCEPT both DVD drives
(Pioner DVR-110D and Sony DRU-510A) now fail to write DVDs.
Under both Roxio and Nero, the write operation starts and
immediately hangs. I cannot kill the process and have to
reboot in order to recover any access to the DVD drive.
More specifically, the Roxio CD Creator UI closes but the
creatorc.exe process refuses to die even after multiple
kill attempts, and holds on to the DVD drive.

I have already tried:

1) Deleted the devices in Computer Management and let
Windows reinstall them after the next boot.

2) Changed the IDE mode in the bios from "Native" to
"Legacy" (whatever that means -- Intel docs leave
a lot to be desired).

3) Re-installed the motherboard-specific .INF files.

This sounds to me like the IDE driver stack got hosed
during the "upgrade" process. Is there anything I can
to do get it working again?

You installed the chipset & other drivers supplied with your new mobo cd?
Yes, but that doesn't appear to be the problem.

I think I may have found the issue. When I examined the
driver stack (in device manager/driver/details) I found
two non-MS filters left over from old software that had
been installed at one time and later removed (Sonic
software and B.H.A). I removed the files and scrubbed
the registry of any references to those files and
rebooted. Nero now works. I will test with Roxio
later.

reinstalled burning software ?

Yes.

I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Roxio
EasyCD&DVD Creator 6. I get the same symptoms,
which include the inability to launch other
processes. Anything that was running when I
started the burn works OK, but I can't seem to
launch anything else. For example, if I try
starting Firefox, the process launches according
to Task Manager but the UI never appears. Ditto
for any other program. I can't even start Device
Manager to look at the CD/DVD driver stack.

If I kill Creator using Task Manager, the UI goes
away but the process remains.

Curiously, Retrospect is able to use the drives
for DVD writing. I believe Retrospect uses its
own device access method and doesn't depend on the
Windows IDE stack.

It's been about a year since this thread was posted, but its the only one that matches my situation so closely. I, too, upgraded my mother board and now the DVD burner exhibits the same problems. I looked at the driver stack and don't recognize anything suspicious. Can I simply delete them all, delete the device from device manager and reinstall with new drivers? Thanks for any help you can provide. I'm about to buy a new burner but am worried I'll have the same problem.

Unfortunately, you're posting to some site that leeches Usenet posts. The
majority of helpers in these groups use real newsreaders so we don't see
the thread to which you are referring. Therefore it's hard to give you
specific advice since we don't know what the original problem was.

Consider using a newsreader to access these newsgroups. This is very easy to
set up and I'll give you information below. If you don't want to do this,
then post back with details of your situation.

In the meantime, after you upgraded your motherboard did you:

1. Do a Repair install of Windows? This is usually necessary.
2. Install all the drivers for your new hardware? This is definitely
necessary.

About newsgroups:

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.

Without more info, and going by the subject line, one can only take stabs at
what the issue may be and my guess would be either a driver/firmware, cable or
jumper issue. Start with checking the support site of the DVD drive/s
manufacturer/s to see if they have any updated software/firmware. You may not
even need to uninstall the drivers, you may be able to update them on top of
what's already installed.

Original thread starts here. Looks like the OP of the thread may have
had some success by fixing upperfilters/lowerfilters type issue.
