I purchased a new upgrade kit (motherboard and processor). I want to install
this and I currently have win 2000 professional with 3HDs and 2 installs.
Can I make this change safely? my current setup is celeron 1g and the new
system is AMD 2800+, all the chipsets are different so the drivers for
everything are new, sound, vid., lan, etc.
If I need to do anything - what is it? should I remove all the hardware
drivers prior to my last shutdown - then install and use the mb disk? I'm
not keen on windows 2000. I have heard that XP will only allow 6 changes and
then it considers the install a new one.
Does 2000 have such a limit? will I encounter problems?
I need help before I attempt this, because I dont want to loose my setup.
this is my main machine for programming and I have literally hundreds of
installed programs.
TIA

No, w2k does not have that funky activation thing going on in XP. Which wersion of W2k do you have; ie Retail Full, Upgrade, or OEM? If you have a Retail Full or Upgrade versions simply leave the old hardware installed. Boot into windows, load the Install CD and select upgrade. When PC begins to restart, shut it down, and then replace motherboard. W2k will then detect and install drivers for your new MB and CPU. Reapply SP4 and other critical updates and you should be good to go.
