I have an older machine running with windows 2000 server as PDC.
I did build a new machine and that one should take over the tasks.
On this moment I have the status that the old machine is the pdc and
the new machine the bdc.
The tool to promote the BDC to PDC is greyed out. Neither works the
demote function.
DId I do something wrong? Do I need to do something different?

Or where can I find the steps.

Greetings.

There are many things wrong listed in your scenario. First and formost
is that a windows 2000 server cannot be a PDC (nt 4.0 domain). It can
be a Domain controller in a AD and have the PDC emulator role. Also in
a Windows 2000/2003 AD there is no BDC. All DC's are peers

So if you are sure that this server is Windows 2000 and is a domain
controller I think that you are using the wrong tool. To promote or
demote and windows 2000/2003 server, making it a DC or removing this
function, you need to run dcpromo from command line. Make sure you
have at least one other DC for the domain up otherwise say goodbye to
everything.

There is some additional thought that goes into all this so my
suggestion would be to seek out professional assistance.

It is a Win2000 server setup, for both machines. You are right about
AD. However, the main machine is recognized as a PDC and the new
machine says it is a BDC. Even I could not believe my eyes, but it is
true.

The DCpromo did not work at all. That is where I am stuck. On the other
hand, I might install the new server again and place that one together
with a test computer on the same ip address and try out if it works.
