New machine - much slower!

I have recently changed from:
Pentium 450
Win 98 SE
Powerpoint 97

to:
Intel Centrino Duo 1.9MHz with 0.9 GB memory
Windows XP Pro SP2
Powerpoint 2000

I would have expected it to be much faster. All runs but the time taken to
load and present my existing presentations has increased
markedly/frustratingly. Any suggestions as to reason and solution.

You're right, it should be just the opposite ... frustrating going back to the
older computer, not moving forward to the new rocket.

What about just starting PPT (from Start, Programs etc, rather than by
doubleclicking the icon for a specific PPT file)? Markedly faster or slower
than the old computer?

Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

Not all of the suggestions will specifically address your problem but it's all
good stuff to do in any case. Pay particular attention to the info about
installing a default printer driver, though.

Then open one of your presentations, choose File, Save As and give it a new
name, save it. See if the new copy loads markedly faster than the old.

Discovered the source of the problem.
Norton Antivirus was set to scan all Office documents as you open them. Not
a good idea for a presentation as it slows down the linking between multipe
ppt files. I have not yet tried if changing the extension to pps will cure
the issue. So at the moment I have just turned off the facility.
