New Lenovo T61 w/XP -- External Mic Setup?

Hi Everyone,

The following used to work on a desktop machine: connect an audio feed
to the external mic port, and then listen to that feed on the external
speaker port. This allows me to hear system beeps as well as music on
the same speaker (or headphone).

Just got a new Lenovo laptop and I can't get it to work. The "Sounds
and Audio Devices" properties only detects the onboard mic. When I
connect to the external mic port, it simply doesn't detect it.

Any idea how to make this work? TIA.

Some PCs with multiple jacks need to be told which jack to "monitor"
for connections. Check in the BIOS and in thr Sounds and Audio
Devices.
 
You have to select and make default the mic in the sound and audio drivers
in control panel.
