Need a current new Laser printer that will work with a pure DOS app.
Ideas? Needs Parallel port or course.

It depends on your price range and other specs like print speed. It may
also depend on the application; if it supports PCL or PostScript output,
no problem, but if you're replacing an impact printer, you may need a
laser that emulates one.

Either way, the HP web page says the LaserJet 1300 would work. I
haven't used them much, so I don't know about their durability. A used
LaserJet 4- or 5- series (not the "L" models) would be less expensive
and probably more durable, but they aren't available new.

I think most current Winprinters are just USB, so quite likely almost
all parallel port lasers will work. To be sure, you need a printer
that supports any variety of PCL (PCL4/5/6). Sometimes you have to dig
deep to find this past all the marketing crap. Or Google for '"printer
name" PCL'.

Actually, the 4L is pretty good. It has a paper tray, not loose
vertical feed that the notorious 5L and 6L have. Mine would jam every
100 pages or so, but easily fixed (open, yank out offending page,
close). It was up past 40,000 pages when I left it with the job.

My 6L is a total, complete piece of junk and has been since the day I took
it out of the box. It's name on the network is "Jam-O-Matic". I think Ron
Popiel designed this damned thing...

I've installed the upgrade/fix kits and while it helps with the initial feed
jams (you know, the 10-sheet-at-a-time problem), but did nothing to help the
paper skew issues.

It's still on it's first toner, and it's going on 5 or 6 years old. It's
been so bad I rarely use it.

The 5L is the same way. That and the 6L were the two models I was
thinking of; I've had other people also tell me that the 4L wasn't bad
at all.

So maybe a better way to recommend the 4/5 series is "any of the
LaserJet 4 or 5 models except the 5L".

I pretty much stay away from all HP personal printers now days. I think the
Samsungs and Brothers are a better design.
