I have just purchased a new laptop and was under the impression that when I
was told "windows vista" comes with it, that I did not have to purchase the
actual software besides. Is this not the case? Do I really need to purchase
the program after my 60-day trial ends? I'm having issues with product keys
and such, so that is why I'm getting so frustrated with this.

Thanks for your help

If you just bought a laptop and the description is Vista as OS operating
system, then your OS should already activated. You don't have to do
anything. The production keys are just there, it won't ask you at ininital
bootup.

Contact the manufacturer of you new laptop to have your questions
properly answered.

Windows Vista is an operating system. Your laptop came preinstalled with
some operating system, probably Windows Vista.

When you buy a computer with a preinstalled operating system from a big
mftr. (Dell, HP, Sony, etc.) it comes with the operating system and some
amount of other software preinstalled. This other software is called the
"bundle". If you did not specifically purchase Microsoft Office (which
is what it sounds like you are talking about), then the Office installed
on your laptop is indeed a trial version.

Refer to your purchase documents and if necessary call the laptop mftr.
to determine exactly what you bought with the system.

The 60-day trial you're talking about does with Microsoft Office and not
Windows Vista. Your Microsoft Office software will expire after 60 days,
but Vista is unlimited. Most manufacturers preinstall a 60-day trial of
Microsoft Office and a 60-day trial of antivirus software. Those programs
will quit after 60 days without purchasing them. If you have Microsoft
Office 2000 or newer, you probably can install it on Vista after your
Microsoft Office trial expires.

Are you sure it should already be activated? I think she may just need to
follow the prompts to activate Vista. Unless, of course, you are right and
the prompt is about a trial of Office.

I just wanted to raise the issue in case, after careful reading of the
prompts and consideration of the situation, the OP may find that it is just
Vista needs activation.

That would depend on the company you purchased the laptop from.
Are you sure the 60 day trial applies to Vista, or are some of the other
programs supplied with your laptop trial versions?

It's quite normal for trial applications to come installed on a new laptop,
however it's certainly *not* normal for the OS supplied to be a trial (at
least not from reputable vendors).

Check with the vendor, and by all means post back here with the name of the
vendor you purchased from for more information.

I didn't write that.
