Hi,

my parents just brought their computer running XP Home to me to get some
things fixed (minor software config and new installation - things I
wouldn't want to tell them via telephone). So they just brought the box
as I told them that I'd have all the required equipment.

now that I connect the box with my mouse & keyboard (both USB -
standard, but obviously not the same brands as installed by my parents)
and boot the system, XP comes up fine. but neither mouse nor keyboard
let me use the system. instead the new hardware detection finds the new
devices and brings up the assistant asking me if I want to connect to
Windows update for new drivers or not. but I cannot move the mouse nor
type anything as both of my input devices are not working....

I've booted now about 20 times, trying various combinations of
mouse/keyboard in and out at bootup time... but without any success. I
also tried to boot in safe mode, but that also didn't make any difference.

so, is there anyone out there with any good ideas on how I can make the
system accept my input devices?

Regards
Stefan

Nice Catch-22 situation. The most probable solution is to use the original
keyboard and mouse that came with the computer. The version of Windows XP
installed in the computer and the bios of the computer may be extremely
proprietary to exclude "universal" devices.

probably won't work either, but, see if you can get into the bios setup
with the usb keyboard, and, if so, see if there are any usb options that
might make a difference.

report back... I'm curious on how this comes out

In addition, post the make/model of the box.
