I'm new to the IT industry. I used to be a systems analyst for about a year 4
years ago but I'm trying to get back into the industry. As of now I have
little training and no certifications. I work on a companies system in my
free time and they pay me under the table. The question I have is first how
much should I be billing them an hour or how should I be billing them? Also I
have a question about a technical problem I have been having. I installed an
old scsi scanner on a xp computer to work with some trucking software they
have. This computer also already had a newer canon usb scanner connected to
it and was working with some jjkeller software they have installed on the
computer. The scsi scanner works fine with the trucking software and the
canon scanner works fine with the canon software but the problem I'm having
is the canon scanner will now not work with the jjkeller software. Being an
IT person is this a problem I should be able to fix myself or should
technical support for JJKeller be the ones to help fix this problem.

hmm, under the table? what billing? if you mean getting paid without any
paper/electronic trail to Revenue Canada, how can you bill them? Note I am
not suggesting anything to getting around Rev Canada.

If you do really get back to IT support or what ever, if have to build up
verifiable work experience, and working and getting paid under table may not
get you far.

Scanner issue? read the help or manual of the software. if not luck that,
Google for scanner selection for XP. Failing that contact the software
vendor. finally get some else to fix or install 2nd scanner elsewhere

OK disregard me billing these people. What I want to understand is if I'm
doing this the right way. I went through troubleshooting the scanner which
works fine under the scanners software. The problem with the software for
JJKeller is that the company doesnt have a copy of the software on cd or on
their server nor do they have the manual. The error message I get when trying
to scan inside the software tells me little. All it says is image file is not
valid. I dont know what image file it is talking about therefore I have tried
to get ahold of a tech support person for this 4k dollar software with very
little success. They tell me they are backed up over 24 hours which really
isnt acceptable in my opinion. Anyway is there anything else that I can do
besides wait for the tech support people or is that what most would do in
this situation?

Why do you need two scanners connected to the same PC?
Seems rather redundant...

It sounds like someone bought the USB scanner with the idea of replacing the
SCSI one, and then ran into problems.
If the trucking software is old enough to predate USB scanners, and does not
use the windows scanner software either, it's time to talk to the trucking
software supplier. One thing to look for is an image file when the old
scanner is used. The details may help in determining what the program
expects. The old scanner may or may not use a standard called "Twain"
(Windows XP has system level support that replaces "Twain" under most
conditions.)
A few of the older scanners had a twain like software support package that
was unique to the Mfr. Is the old scanner recognized and usable by other
windows programs?

Makes and models of the scanners, and the scsi interface card make and model
might be helpful if you care to post further.

The trucking software used (which is called Crown Trucking) uses a Ricoh
IS01. In order for me to get this scanner working with this software I needed
to install a software driver package that I got from kofax.com. It had all
the necessary drivers for the software to recognize this scanner. The problem
is this computer never had this scanner attached to it. The computer that did
died therefore they used the xp computer that already had the canon scanner
for the JJKeller software installed on it. When I installed the ricoh scanner
is when the canon scanner stopped working with the JJKeller software. At the
time I didnt notice that the canon scanner wasnt working correctly due to the
fact that I didnt know what software they used with it. The canon scanner
they use is the DR-2080C. This scanner will not work in the Crown software
therefore they needed the other scanner to be installed for that
application....although come to think of it this canon scanner can also be
connected through scsi so maybe if it is connected that way the Crown
software will recognize it? That might be another possibility. Any other
suggestions I would really appreciate and thanks for the help so far.
