New Intel processors running hot?

Hi,
I've heard reports of some of the latest P4 cpus running hot. Does anyone
know which specifically. I'm about to buy a P4-2.8-3ghz and would like to
avoid the problem cpus. I'm leaning towards the 2.8E-because of its 1 meg of
cache, but I'm not sure if this is one of the vpus that runs hot. I'd also
like the hyperthreading feature.Thanks.

BTW, I'm also considering the Intel D865PERL motherboard.

The Prescotts (E for 800MHz FSB and G for 533MHz FSB) tend to run hot.
I decided to hold off on one of those on a recent upgrade and opted
for the Northwood 2.8C instead. It overclocks beautifully and the
temps are more manageable. It also supports HT.

The new Intel "Prescott" CPU's are the ones that run VERY Hot and contain 1
MB L2 cache. They are denoted by the "E" in their names: 2.8E. I would
avoid it and get a "C" series CPU.
 
It's been shown in tests and benchmarks that the bigger L1/L2 cache does
nothing to improve the performance of the Prescott.

It's an pure Intel marketing thingy and was on the back of a poorly
devised/designed chip in some vein attampt to gain market share over the
Athlon 64.

No, it really does something. I improves the performance of the
Prescott to the point where it's almost as fast as the P4C.
Without that bigger cache, the P4E would have been an even more
'total', total disaster.
