Dan

I am trying to upgrade my OS to windows XP from win 98,
but during the installation process I continually get an
error cannot copy file XXXXX.XXX. Some common files are
p3. videoprt. (sorry can't recall the extentions) and
most recently it was a .fon file. Regardless it seems to
be a different file each time. The CD itself is brand new
and has no dirt or scratches on it, the CD and hard drives
are working fine under windows 98. I did manage to get a
couple installations off of the cd I have, but ended up
having to reformat the hard disk because these
installations were so unstable! Now I can't even get
finished one. Any ideas anyone?

Hi, Dan.

HOW are you trying to do the installation? Are you booting from the WinXP
CD-ROM? Or are you booting into Win98 and running Setup from there?

Thanks to both of you for answering.

In terms of instalation, the cannot copy file error
occurred both when I tired intall by booting the CD and
when I tried to install (using the CD) from windows 98.
Copying the entire CD to my hard disk and then
installing, allowed the installation to complete
successfully. Perhaps one of you could tell me why this
happens?

Thanks again!

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

Hi,

You've got some interference going on. You should be disabling everything
before upgrading, especially your antivirus software. It also helps to clear
\temp folders, and disable WinME's System Restore function. There are more
preparatory steps listed here:
