I was unable to access any microsoft web site (or Excite.com either).

I posted on this NG and followed the good suggestions that were responses
but nothing worked.

Today I bought a new drive, took out the original and reinstalled Win2k from
scratch.

Same problem. Other sites work fine, but not microsoft or excite.

This laptop is plugged into an SMC switch which is plugged into a linksys
wireless G router which is plugged into a SpeedStream DSL modem.

I tried plugging directly into the router, no change.

My desktop is plugged into the switch and it works without problems.

What could this possible be?

TIA

That's really not a lot to go on Mindy. Please don't assume everyone is up
on your last thread. If everything is common except the workstations then
I'd start looking there. Not being able to see your routes, configs makes
it difficult to determine on this end.

What does no microsoft or excite mean? First, get out of your browser for
now. If you can ping and tracert and telnet to the MSFT web server from
there, then that's not the issue. If it only doesn't work in the browser,
then it could be spyware, plugins, etc.

Thanks Roland. Yes, you are right I did not leave much
information.

A problem as simple as this, but with so much history
makes it difficult to figure out where to start.

Essentially I have four computers in my network.
23hardwired to the switch and one wireless. Three of
these systems can access www.microsoft.com and
www.excite.com with no hesitation. The fourth is a Dell
Latitude Laptop. It accesses everwhere I have tried
EXCEPT www.microsoft.com and www.excite.com.

For the network, I have a 16 Port SMC switch plugged into
a Linksys G router plugged into a Speedstream DSL modem.

On the Dell laptop, I have tried Xircom 100Mb wired pcmcia
card, linksys G wireless card, netgear B wireless card and
currently an NDC 16 bit wired pcmcia card. All cards work
the same, all sites except Microsoft and Excite.

I downloaded SP4, wrote it to CD and installed it with no
changes.

I checked all the security policies, no trusted sites, no
excluded sites either. I made the security minimum
everywhere, still no workee.

I've been through the hosts files, (pristine), DNS
servers, nslookup for microsoft and excite and tracert for
these two sites.

nslookup microsoft.com reports an IP address that if
entered into one of the other computers browser address
lines goes directly to Microsoft.

tracert microsoft.com gets 14-15 hops and times out.

Installing Opera as a browser has the exact same symptoms.

Today, I bought a new laptop drive and installed Windows
2K professional with Sp2. Nothing on the drive except a
brand new install of WIN2K Pro from original CD.

When the system came up, I immediately installed the
drivers for the 16 bit NDC ethernet wired card and plugged
into the switch and tried Microsoft.com and Excite.com.

NO CHANGE! I still cannot access those sites with that
computer.

I'm in a quandry. How could 3 other systems using the
exact same network work perfectly and 1 be so selective?

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

I have encountered the exact same problems witht he wireless g router from
linksys. Upgrade the firmware on it, What happens is that the MTU gets
messed up. If you reset it to factory defaults, you can get to those sites
for a bit, but be sure to get the firmware.
