new install probs

I am having 2 probs with an new install of XP pro.
1, After any reboot the display willl default to 800x600 res
2, when i go to shut down the pc i get a XP logo and a message "ok to turn your computer off" message as you use to get with Win 95
I have done all the updates, and tried new drivers for my vid card

pc spec:
Pentium 4 2.66
512 mb
g force 4 4200 64mb vid card
SCSI drives X2 36 gig
 
The power issue is probably down to APM not being turned on.
Has the driver for your VGA Been installed ok - (No errors on device
manager)
