new IE windows not opening maximized

Is there a way to fix the problem in the registry?
I run enough background applications, I really dont want to use another.
Nor do I want to use the workaround described in many of the answers; this
is not a complete and true fix (I guess I am a purist).
 
Good try but this is the same workaround posted throughout the community. I
was hoping for a true solution that could be made in the registry. IE6
installed on my PC did not always do this, it just started 2-3 weeks ago.

It is not new. IE 4, 5, 5.5, and 6 always did this. You just never had the
last IE window closed be a smaller one.

My standard reply to this question was last updated in December, 2004.
 
2-3 weeks ago, the last IE window you closed was a smaller window. We've
given you the way to undo this.
