Received no replies in Win help and support so:
I suddenly have a icon on my desktop called desktop. If I try to delete it I
get a warning that it could affect other programs "not the standard warning
that says it only deletes the shortcut not the program".
It opens a file named (configuration settings) using notebook.
Can I safely delete it?

If it's a desktop.ini file, then it can be deleted. To see the file
extension, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in Folder Options
View tab.

I do not seem to be able to locate it in this case.
What I get when I click on the icon labeled icon is a notebook display
containing:

"[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media
Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4"

and if I try to delete it I get a warning that its a system file.
Ramesh, I would also like to tell you at this time that I have read many of
your previous replies to others and they are very well explained. Thank you
for your effort.

Hi shakey,

If you're using the English version of Windows XP, you can safely delete
this particular desktop.ini file. This file is used by the Windows XP to
provide non-English user interface support.

Thanks again. I have deleted it two times and maybe its will not come back
for a third try. My keyboard is English but I have alternate Japanese IMI.
