New icon in notification area

I'm having two new problems:
First, a new icon has appeared in my notification area that claims to be
updates for windows service pack 2. However, it has nothing to do with
microsoft. I haven't installed the "updates" but the icon in the
notification area cannot be removed. I tried in "properties" to click
"always hide" but this did no good.
A second problem related to it is when I click on start and then "turn off
computer", the box that appears that says "hibernate", "shut down", and
"restart" now has a little updates shield icon on the shut down icon.
Further, just underneath it says that if you press shut down it will
automatically install the updates.

I tried a system restore and ran Norton A-V, SpyWareBlaster and AdAware6.0,
all to no avail. Anyone who can help me with this will be a god in my book!

Hi,
This definitely sounds like malware.
Go to http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm >>> General Troubleshooting
Advice.
Then... was NAV updated? Was Ad-aware the latest version (Ad-aware SE) with
the latest definition file?
Try Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Anything new in add/remove programs? Anything suspicious in MSCONFIG>
Startup?
If you can find a name for this program, try a google search. You probably
don't have the first machine to be infected.
Or, to bring in outside help, go to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work
through steps 1-4, then post a
HijackThis log for analysis (step 5.)

Hope this helps,
Don

This sounds like the Win XP Security center?
You can check it's settings in control panel.
Look at auto-update?
Many security updates where released yesterday.

Install Updates at Shutdown
Automatic Updates can improve the security of your computer. By default,
after you install SP2, these updates are installed automatically when you
shut down your computer.
When you click Shut Down, if updates are downloaded and ready to install, a
new option appears. Depending on which edition of Windows XP your computer
is running, one of two things will happen.
If the Turn off computer dialog box appears, it displays a new security
shield icon that gives you the option to Update and Turn Off your computer.
If you choose this option, the downloaded updates are installed, and then
your computer shuts down.
If the Shut Down Windows dialog box appears, it will include the default
drop-down option to "Install important updates and shut down."
In both cases, it is best to install updates when you shut down your
computer. However, you can also choose an option to shut down without
installing updates.
