I have a lot of files on CD which were formatted using my old HP 932
which failed to survive a move earlier this year.

If I get a newer HP Officejet 550 (or other printer) how much
reformatting am I going to have to do in order to reprint these
documents without a whole lot of messing arount with margins/tabs etc?

thanks

Isn't the document formatting done in the application used to produce the
document, such as Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect? I don't use the
printer to set up my documents, I use the document to set up the printer.

I suspect the OP used the "Print To File" option. That basically captures the
PCL data (for an HP printer) or Postscript (for Postscript printers) to a disk
file instead of printing it. The idea is that the file can be piped to the
printer at a later time or even from a different machine without the use of the
original application. Its somewhat more common in the *nix world, but still a
bit strange to use for archival purposes.

To answer the question, most of the HP printers I've seen are fairly compatible
PCL wise, as long as the features & formatting embedded in the file are
supported by the printer.
