I had to replace my mb, hd, video card. Basicly
everything. When I installed xp home, had it partition
format my new Maxtor 80gig hd as 1 drive. It made it the
F: drive. I want it as the c: drive. If I reformat or
repartition can I tell it to be the c:? I know with ME
when you partition the drive it automaticly makes it the
c:. It seems that earlier versions of windows let you
have more flexability changing drive letters. I like my
cd roms to be ie L: M: and I had my zip drive as K:. But
xp doesn't. But I really want my hd to be the c:. My mb
cd looks at the c: and if it's not available I get an i/o
21 error. I'm about ready to install ME then upgrade.
Before my computer fried I upgraded to xp home over ME
and I had no problems. I also have a ECS N2U400-A mb
using the Nivida chipset, 512 mgs ddr 3200 ram, fx5600
128 mg ulta video card, SB live value sound card.

Hello

For I do not upgrade from one OS to another OS because
sooner or later you will have a problem. If I was doing it I would just
back my important data and do a full and clean install. You do not
need to load Win ME and then Win XP, Load XP from the start
and during the installation process you will be prompted to for the
Win ME cdrom and take it from their. OS does not define your drive
letter and Win ME does not. After you fdisk and partition a drive
it's defaulted to c: no matter what the OS

Well it did when I had xp partition and format my hd. It
made it the F: drive. And I'm going to try and get this
fixed before I do load on my data. I don't know why the
hd was made f:. It's the master on the primary ide.

John

If you had another hd or partition connected with an OS installed on it, xp
will consider that C: and install itself to the next available drive letter.
Being master on primary ide will have nothing to do with it.

I don't know about it being F: instead of C: drive. Mine setup at G:
instead of C: drive and my post in Win XP general still has no answer

Re: other drive letters - Go to Control Panel -Administrative Tools -
Computer Managment - Disk Management. Those four clicks will get you to a
window with the drives showing. In the lower right corner of the window,
right click on the cd drive whose letter you want to change. Select the new
letter and ok. You will note that the letter is changed. If for some
reason, you want to use the letter from that drive for a different drive,
you must reboot. That frees up the drive letter for re-assignment.
