My current HD is sounding much louder over time. I am concerned that
it may be failing. If this is true, how could I transfer the software
programs that I have currently loaded on this HD to a new HD? My
concern are the software programs I have loaded via the web on my
current HD with no backup CD-ROM disks. I would appreciate any
assistance that you could provide me.

Hi Tom. Let us (TINU) assume you bought a new Seagate HD
to install.
You would go to the Seagate site, and D/load (FREE) the software to
do the `transfer` job for you.
Seagates` software is called Disk Wizard.
Most HD manufacturers have similar software.

Also Maxtor (does Samsung or Hitachi?). Only one of the HDs needs to be of
the correct brand (I have 3 and can do to/from Maxtor to either of the
other 2).

Tom, as previously mentioned, if you have either a Seagate or Maxtor
currently installed, or plan to install either brand as your new drive,
download Seagate's DiscWizard - http://tinyurl.com/2rbfu3

The current offering of DiscWizard is actually Acronis TrueImage, which has
a Drive Clone feature.

Otherwise, I've had good success with xxclone - http://www.xxclone.com/.
The only times I haven't been successful in cloning a drive w/ xxclone is on
laptops when they have a hidden system partition (which is quite common).
