New HD on old computer: auto-detecting hangs

Hi,

To a 6-years old box with an ASUS P2B-F motherboard I tried to
add a 2nd harddisk, a WD400. Writing and reading to the new disk
works, but not booting: Hard Disk Error.

The problem is in the BIOS setup: auto-detecting secondary master
hangs, it's even impossible to interrupt this (with the F4 key).

I have the impression that an old motherboard does not appreciate
a contemporary component. Does anybody know the magic tric to
persuade it?

Can you make a small partition of say 1GB or 2GB at the start of the WD400
and try to boot?

Martin.

You might need a BIOS update, check the Asus site.
Worst come to worst, you can get a IDE PCI card to recognise your new
HD.
