OK - the laptop is way beyond it's regular life. A Compaq Presario 1060
('97 vintage).... 48MB RAM and a 1.08 GB hard drive and all works. The
hard drive is a 5V .7Amp drive. My PCMCIA NIC works fine.

When I install the 10GB drive (5V, .5Amp) all works fine, except no PCMCIA
is recognized.

Any idea why the PCMCIA slots would dissappear when installing the newer
drive?

If you didnt clone the original drive using ghost or whatever,
and installed it using the recovery CD etc instead, you may
well have not installed the drivers for the card slots.
