New Hardware Wizard appears when no new hardware

I have a machine that, at startup, displays the found new
hardware wizard saying that it has detected a new printer
(that is not there) in fact no printer is connected to
the machine and the machine is not connected to a network
(currently) what is it detecting and how can I get it to
stop (I see no irregularities in the device manager) ???
