Hi
This may have an obvious answer, but I installed a new
motherboard and now my XP home edition posts but won't
boot. The new m/b boots another old drive with Win ME.
Why not the XP drive. The BIOS settings are set very
conservative.

Usually, swapping the mainboard to a different sort would require at least a
repair installation of XP.

"How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"

(In brief: change your BIOS settings to boot from the CD drive. Boot from
the XP CD. Choose to Install, rather than going to the Repair Console. Under
Install, choose Repair rather than New.)

This ought to preserve most installed applications and settings. It will get
rid of everything installed under Windows Update.

You'll also have to activate XP again. (This would probably apply even if
the XP installation allowed you to boot into Windows.) If it has been less
than 120 days since your last activation, you may have to do it by
telephone.

All of the above assumes that you have a retail copy of XP. You may not be
able to re-use an OEM copy (which is why it's cheaper).

It's supposed to be possible to avoid this by deleting the proper drivers
before swapping the HD into a new system, but I've never done that. It
sounds like it's a bit late in your case.

Good luck.
