despite loading drivers from the hardware suppliers, each
time I turn on the computer I get the following
message, 'New Hardware Found". I am then asked to load
the drivers. What can I do to rectify this problem. It is
happening with my Epson CX5200 and my Linksys 10/100
ethernet card. I have even gone to the extent of
reformating the hard drive and reloadig the Win 2000
system but to no avail.

Try running MSINFO32 and checking Components => Problem Devices. It might
yield a clue. Also, look through the Hardware Manager list for flagged
devices.

It sounds like you might have some buggered up driver installs.

I ran into a similar problem with an HP DeskJet 722C. The problem, as it
turned out, was completely due to the way HP insisted on installing their
software - totally separate from the typical Hardware Manager method. HP's
workaround was to let the Hardware Manager fail to find the driver and the
messages would stop.

There was a side effect - print jobs failed at a significant rate. I got
curious and started digging into the system.

The most useful bit of information I uncovered was from running MSINFO32 and
going to the Components => Problem Devices folder. The printer was listed.
Using the information from MSINFO32 and digging around in the Registry, I
found the offending entry and began experimenting. The HP printer was
actually listed twice - once for the driver installation and once for
plug'n'pray. (Danger, Will Robinson!) After a LOT of trial and error, plus
uninstalling and reinstalling, I managed to stumble upon just the right
combination of tweaks to make MSINFO32 and the Hardware Manager happy. It
also took care of the overwhelming number of print job failures.

If only HP would write their installs so that they actually follow
Micro$oft's standard de jour.

Hope this helps you narrow down the problem.
