My hardrive crashed and i bought a new one, now i need an operating system.
Is there another way to get windows xp or vista without having to buy a new
one? i'd rather not waste an extra 150$ on an operating system.

If you don't have any disks that came with your computer, you're up
that creek without a paddle, I'd guess.

Is it a prebuilt computer? You could call the manufacturer and ask how to
obtain reinstallation disks. It may cost about $10 or so, but that's better
than $150. Your PC should have the installation key on a sticker stuck to
your computer somewhere.

If it's a retail or upgrade copy of Vista you have (or XP), then you can
just reinstall using the same key as before.

I don't think 150 for an OS is a waste ....especially since nothing will
work without it!!!!

If you had XP or Vista before how did it come...on a CD/DVD? ..use the same
medium to reinstall on new drive.
Then reinstall all of your Mobo/Video/Sound drivers....
Then Install anti virus................
then reinstall all of your applications
..then go online and update
pre-installed on the drive that failed....no backup ??..contact manufacturer
for restore CD's....cost less than new OS.
takes about 4 days for delivery..and will place the system back to a "just
purchased" state.
all updates will need to be reapplied and any programs that did not come
with machine will need to be reinstalled.
