New Hard Drive

When running the restore disc on my PC, there was a loss
in power and now the hard drive will not boot at all. I
have bought a new hard drive but cannot load XP onto it,
although I have a licence number as the reload disc doesnt
have the software, apparently it is on the old unusable
hard drive. I phoned Siemens who said they they might be
able to get the hard drive going again but I would lose
all data on it.
I have put 98 on the new hard drive, but none of the
peripherals work at the moment becasue I assume their
drivers are all fixed to XP.
How can I reload XP back onto my machine without having to
fork out for another copy of the software?

If the restore disk is bootable, just boot the CD and start the restore
process. You will loose anything on that drive.

I tried running the restore disc with the new hard drive
when I first got it. It tells me that it is just a restore
disc and doesn't have the software on it.
Time computers say I have to buy a boot CD off them with
the full verion on but its more tan £50 and I've already
spent out on a new hard drive!

You could try finding a friend with the same OS and borrowing their OS CD to
boot from.

The message for anyone else reading this is..... Think carefully before you
buy a computer from Time or anyone else.

When you buy a new computer tell them in writing exactly what S/W you want
and how you want it. For example consider specifying that you want the
original Microsoft CDs (either OEM or Retail depending on your budget)
provided for Windows and any applications you need (eg Word, Excel,
Outlook). This will cost more, and it may mean you don't get bundle of
other "free" S/W but it makes life easier when you have problems like this.
