Can someone tell how to format a slave hard drive? I am
using windows xp.I know how to format afresh but never
done it to a secondary slave...just don't want mess
evrything up..

Once the drive is installed you can open My Computer, and if it is
recognized, just r-click and choose Format

Hi Trace

Assuming you have correctly connected the new hard drive with any necessary
master/slave switches correctly identified.

In XP

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
Disk management is listed under Storage on the left
Select 'disk management'
The new drive should appear in the right hand panel
Right-click the drive there and initialize.
You should then be able to partition and format (NTFS usually).

It may be worthwhile to look through the info on using disk management at
the web-page linked below
(alternatively the help pages in disk management should be useful)

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html

Although it is on the Seagate site the instructions should work for any
drive.

Hope that helps
Pete
