Well, we're not really Microsoft support. We're simply other users of
Microsoft products who recognise the need to pass on our own experience to
help other users. Sometimes some of those posting think that their
experience is of more use than it actually is.... but is here goes.
Assuming you have correctly connected the new hard drive with any necessary
master/slave switches correctly identified.
Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
Disk management is listed under Storage on the left
Select 'disk management'
The new drive should appear in the right hand panel
Right-click the drive and initialize.
You should then be able to partition and format (NTFS usually).
It may be worthwhile to look through the info on using disk management at
the web-page linked below
(alternatively the help pages in disk management should be helpful)

Although it is on the Seagate site the instructions should work for any
drive.
