I have a dell dimension 8200 bought in 2001; I need to format my c drive and
have made boot discs which should work ( I do have my original installation
CD should these not work) So I don'tthink I have a problem there.
Lately I have noticed that one of my hard drives emits weird dounds (like
spring being streched ...) so I figure the drive may be on it's way out.. so
I decededd to replace one of these. I have looked at many but there are too
many. I have been recomended to buy a WD so this is probably what I will buy
but am not sure what would work well for me as I do not wantto buy anything
that would not be compatible with my system or that would be too much for my
system. Both drives run 7200 rpm at the moment.
I am running a 1.8 gigaheartx Intel Pentium 4;8 kb primary memory cache;256
kilobytes secondsry memory cache. I have 256 Megabytes Installed memory and
two empty slots; Board is a Dell Computer Dimension 8200;Buss clock 100
megahettz; BIOS Dell COmputer Corpotration A01
I am running XP home with sp2 (build 2600)
I don't want to put too much money but will dish out some perhaps for more
memory if this would help.
Thank you.

Somewhere in there was a question???

any HD with the right connection (IDE) running at 7200rpm and of a decent
size(60-120gb) will do you.
If you do not wish to go thru the reinstallation process you should look for
a cloning program that will make an exact bootable clone of your present HD
onto the new HD.
Usually the HD manufacturers website has this program available for a free
download.

Hi James G.,

An ATA100 Western Digital hard drive should be compatible with your system,
as last summer I replaced a defective drive with a WD drive in a friend's
Dimension 8250, and she has had no problems with it. The A01 in the details
that you posted for your system is probably the BIOS Revision....you might
want to do some research and find out hard drive size limitation for the A01
revision. If I recall correctly, the drive size limitation for my friend's
8250 was 120G....I explained to her about flashing the BIOS to a newer
revision, which would remove the 120G limitation, as well as the pitfalls of
a flash gone bad....she opted to stick with a lesser drive size.

No doubt your Dimension is equipped with RDRAM (though you may want to
double-check on that), which will cost you an arm and a leg when dishing out
money for more memory.

Regards,

You know you are right I never did really as a question ... funny thing I
got two answers !! Thank you so kindly.
Have a great one !!
