I am purchasing a 200 gb hard drive. My question is how to partition it.
Should I have 2 partitions one for xp the other for vista or 3 with the
additional partition for applications? Also what are some suggestions about
the size of the partitions?

Most people, if they have a separate 3rd partition, use it for data, so it
makes backups easier.

Just as a suggestion, perhaps having one partition for each operating system
and then one additional partition for "My Documents." It is a little more
secure, since you can reformat either O/S without losing documents, and you
can also share most of the documents with any O/S you have on the system.
Also consider purchasing an external hard drive for back up purposes.

I would go with 50Gb for XP, 50Gb for Vista then maybe the rest as a third
NTFS partition for all your storage and backups. Both operating systems
with be able to see the extra partition so you would not have to have two
lots of your documents.
When you come to installing, install XP first onto C partition and get all
the drivers and service packs. Once you have all the service packs and
updates then install the vista on the D partition (ensure you select custom
install so you can choose D drive).
