Hi

I just bought a new hard drive. I was told it would simply plug in and work.
It has been correctly setup, it appears ok in BIOS and it comes up in control
panel under system but it does not come up at all in my computer. Can someone
please offer some help or an explanation =) would be greatly appreciated!

I have done all of that stuff. i read the top of the hard drive and it says
"windows XP prepares the drive during installation. if this is a second drive
then disk management can be used to prepare the drive"

how do i get disk management?

It sounds alot like the new disk doesn't have a Dirve letter.

Right click on My Computer and choose Manage, then choose Disk Management.

You should be able to see all your harddisks and CD drives there, the new
HDD might well need to be activated which means basically right clicking on
the new harddisk and selection activate ( i think can't quite remember what
its called ) then the harddisk should have a drive letter like "D:" and then
you will be able so see it under My computer.

Hope this helps.

In disk management, right-click and create new partition, then format format
A new disk comes with nothing on it, no partitions or anything else..

The new hard drive cannot appear in Windows Explorer or My
Computer, nor can disk management assign it a drive letter, until it has
been partitioned and formatted. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk
Management. Create and format partition(s) on the second hard drive as
desired.

"My Computer" is a desktop shortcut, is in fact using Windows Explorer.
Windows Explorer is available under start, all programs, accessories.
Windows Explorer is looking for hard drives partitioned and formatted in
FAT16, or FAT32 or NTFS format. Based on your post information, I would
believe the hard drive added does not fit that description.

Then, therefore, you wanted from the outset how to get to disk management.
And, should have been your only question at the original post. Incidentals,
like why this is needed, is secondary.
