i am trying to install a 40gb 6e040l0 maxtor hdd on an existing computer and
install windows xp.

the bios has successfully auto detected the drive and i have partitioned and
formatted it with the maxblast 3 utility from maxtor (which i have used
numerous times before with success).

the problem starts when i try to load windows xp. i get the usual "set up is
inspecting your hardware" etc and the familiar blue screen whilst certain
files are copied but then the blue window has a message "set up is starting
windows".

at this point the whole thing freezes and won't go any further. i have never
experienced this before and would appreciate any ideas.

thank you.

This may or may not help. I added a Maxtor hard drive to
a computer running XP Home and used the Maxtor software to
format it. All seemed OK but XP wouldn't recognize the
new drive. Problem went away when I quit using the Maxtor
software (came on a CD with the new drive) and reverted to
the basic 'format X:' and fdisk.

yes, thanks....

after formatting with maxblast i used the powermax utility to write zeros to
the whole drive (basically to clear the maxblast partition) and then went
straight to the windows xp cd and formatted with that. worked fine. thanks.

even the maxtor website recommends use of winxp format over maxblast.
