There are third party software like Drive Image from Powerquest and Ghost
from Norton that can do it.

Hi,
I am struggling with the same problem, but I have
Winxp pro. It has not been as easy as I have been told.
Perhaps it is my computer. I used drive image 7 to copy
to a new partitioned hard drive. You are supposed to be
able according to drive image 7, to reverse the drives
after the copying and it will reboot as long as the
jumpers are set accordingly. It will not reboot for me.
I was told to try a repair install on the new hard drive,
but afterwards that did not work and it removed most of
my data on the boot portion of my new hard drive. I
tried a few other suggestions and for a while could not
start my computer even with my original drive. So I am
still trying to figure out how to do this.

Unfortunately (IMHO) Symantec has acquired Power Quest, so Drive Image
will probably end up on the dust heap. It was never really completely
finished, but the basic features work, mostly.
I have Drive Image 7.01, and while it promises to do the job, there are
some serious caveats. If you are replacing the drive with an identical
one, there will likely be no problems. But going for a larger drive
could give you a headache, especially if the drive needs a new controller.
I have been working for 3 days to migrate my Compaq running XP from a 30
GB Maxtor drive to a 120 GB Maxtor drive attached to a Maxtor Ultra
ATA/133 PCI adapter card. I have a full backup from Drive image, which
was done over LAN to my Win98 computer. The backup is good, and I have
verified that it works. However, when I do a restore to the new drive
attached to the new controller, the computer boots to a blue screen.
All the restored files on the new drive appear to be good, but there's
obviously something wrong, presumably with the registry (?) specifying
wrong boot time information. I know the drive and controller are good,
because I can make a new installation of XP on them and it works fine.
I really don't want to to reinstall all my other software and redo all
the tweaks, but that may be the only solution, in my case. I currently
have a fresh installation of XP on the drive, along with all the old,
non-operating system, files from the old drive. Of course they can't be
used because they aren't "installed."
The trouble with using Drive Image or Ghost in this situation is that
the information will, or at least may, be incompatible with the new
hardware configuration. This may be a bed of roses, but some roses have
thorns! Good luck...
