When I installed my new hard drive and installed XP my
drive was assigned the letter f:. The knowledge base
says this can happen when a zip drive is present. I do
have a zip drive, but would still like to change my f:
back to the universal c: designation. I have tried to
use the administrative tools to change the letter.
However, it just tells me that Windows cannot modify the
letter of my boot drive. Any suggestions on how to
change the letter without reformating and reloading?

I don't think it can be done - too much of the Windows XP installation would
be invalid or need updating.

With my two hard drives i always disconnect the slave drive's power and IDE
cables before a clean (re)install.
Then once XP is installed i re-connect the slave.
This is the only way i can be 100% sure that the master boot drive will be
designated C:

I have no ZIP drives, just two hard drives, a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW.

Martin.
