New hard disk problem

OK, I purchased a new 40GB hard drive today, and
installed it as per the instructions in the manual. I
already have a 60GB disk installed, so this is the
second, slave.

The computer recognises the disk in the BIOS correctly
and continues to load Windows which then recognises new
hardware and, supposedly, installs it.

However, when I try to use the new disk, it is nowhere to
be found. Not in My Computer, or any 'Save As...'
directory,.

It IS, however, in the Device Manager along with my
current C drive in the control manager, supposedly
running properly!

So why can't I find it?

Any help you can offer would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
Disk management is listed under Storage
Right-click the drive and initialize.
You will then be able to partition and format.

If you want further details then there is info on installing a disk using
disk management here

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html

Although it is on the Seagate site the instructions should work for any
drive.

Hope that helps
Pete
