Using Windows XP Home Edition - I have replaced my
secondary hard disk with a larger one and although it is
showing up ok in hardware manager it does not show up
under my computer in windows explorer - I assume this is
because it needs to be formatted etc but am unable to
figure out how to do this - any help would be very much
appreciated.

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
Click on DISK MANAGEMENT and in the lower right-hand
window (gray shaded area), right-click on your second drive
and select INITIALIZE DISK.

If that does not work:

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the Command Prompt window, type: DISKPART , hit enter.
Then type: RESCAN , hit enter.
Try initializing the disk again.

I had exactly the same problem, the problem was I had not
partitionned the new disk. go to the disk manager in the
tools administration, right click the disk , then click
on partition. Follow the assistant as you go along than
name it "d" "E" or whatever. You will now see it in my
computer.

Good luck
