New graphics card: ati 9800se all-in-wonder

I am currently in the process of upgrading my computers graphic
capabilties. I have replaced my old geforce 2mx with an ati 9800se
all-in-wonder.

When I switch on my computer, with the new card installed, the power
light at the front flashes and the fans begin to turn on both the
graphics card and the cpu......then the computer dies.

Why would this happen? Do I need a PSU with more power? I am using a
duron 700 processor and an old board.....is it likely to be
compatability issue?

Most definitely. In fact what you're doing is really well, stupid, for want
of a better word. Why on earth would you put a high end graphics card - in a
board that probably doesn't support more than 2x at best and has only a
700MHz CPU?! You have to question the intelligence of someone who would
spend £150 on a graphics card for a what, must be at least 5 or six year old
system. For just £50 more you could have bought an AMD64 2800 bundle - mind
you, then you definitely would have needed a new PSU. Hell, for £300 you
could buy a semi-decent system from HP!

Not only can your PSU not handle it (I have a Duron 850 upstairs and it runs
perfectly with a 180W) I very much doubt your motherboard can either. And,
even if you did manage to coax it into life, it would be such a huge
bottleneck (I hope you weren't seriously thinking it would improve your FPS
FPS!) as to render your system unuseable. I've never tried putting a
higher-end graphics card in a board with only a 2x AGP, but I would bet
quite a bit that it would be problematic at best.

You would have been better off putting that £150 towards the purchase of a
new system. You need quite a bit more than just a new PSU.

A pre-built Duron 700 probably wouldn't have a suitable PSU to run a Radeon
9800. Along with that, your motherboard might have an AGP 1x or 2x slot,
producing 3.3v. You need to list your entire system, as 'old board' doesn't
tell us much. Does your system still boot if you put the GeForce2 MX back
in?

In response to the question of my inteligence. I admit that i am
stupid and tend to rely on luck when i build systems rather
experience. Any help...no matter how scathing is appreciated.

That is only enough info to determine (it is the part number for
a) Via Southbridge. However, since the card physically fits in
the slot it should work in at least AGP 2X mode or possibly AGP
4X.

Make it work: Try a higher capacity, quality name-brand power
supply. 350W should be sufficient and a little extra reserve
power for the parts you've mentioned. If you plan to upgrade the
other parts soon (see below) you might consider a 400-480W PSU
instead.

Make it work well: Upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and memory.
The video card is severely bottlenecked by the rest of the
system. That card is (obviously) best meant for gaming but the
rest of your system is far too slow to support a modern game that
might need a modern video card. Anything faster than a Geforce 3
TI200 would be overkill for that system.

You also need to learn the correct terminology. 'giga/hertz/' is a
measurement of frequency. You mean 'giga/byte/' which is a measurement of
capacity.
 
It would be nice if you had stated what wattage output your current power
supply is. But, I would hazard to say that, at least, you need a larger
power supply unit.
