I JUST bought and installed FP 2003 and activated it. I also let it
download/pdate everything it wanted from the MS site. This is on XP Pro SP2
with ALL the latest patches etc.

The PROBLEM:

Whenevevr I try to OPEN A site locally it simply crashs & restarts.

If I try to CREATE a new ste locally (http://localhost/whatever) I get the
error message "Server error: Error 5 opening registry key
"SOFTWARE\Classes\.123"

I found a technote relating to this on MS site but it describes Sharepoint
server issues and that's certainly not the case here.

I'm tad upset to run into this after shellingout the money!

I'd really appreciate it somebody could help me out. Short of that, since I
just bought the thing and it is failing at such an basic level, is there a
free tech support number I can call?

Thanks!

Did you install the server and is it running?

Install problems are free service call I believe.

Try this...
Open FP
File | New... One Page Web Site (you can add more stuff later)
and just create a new site...see what happens.

(I don't think I've ever had to create the site directly under localhost)

Same thing. It trys to create a site at "http://<--nohost--->/mysite" and
fails of course, so if I substitute localhost for nohost (which seems the
loogical thing to do, it generates an eror message that it can't. If I try
to BROWSE, it does its crash/restart trick.

It WILL create a site in c:\documents and settings\...\My Webs (I just
discoevred, thanks!) but that's NOT where I need it to go. I need to place
it on my \intepub\wwwroot but when I try tha by specifying the path ifsays
"Unable to create a dosk-based web at "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\whatever" because
its parent Web woul not be a diskbased site. Create the disk-based site
elsewhere, outside of you web server's document heirarchy"

...well at least it's not crashing when I try this. What giibberish though. I
understand what it's saying but this is a dumb limitation and is totally
contrary with how normal web developers work. Why can't FP play in this same
sandbox?

...grumble grumble grumble....

Rob - I really appreciate your help! It's FP that's making me crazy!

You can only have a single root web under Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro. Open Http://localhost
directly in FP, then create a folder, then right click and select convert to web / site. Then you
can start to build your site in the subweb / subsite.

I have similar problem. I have IIS running on XPpro SP2 and it wa
working OK but have done a lot of development work and now with
FrontPage I cannot create a new Frontpage web site. IT originally gave
the error cannot create web FP sites on Sharepoint Server and I did
find a Sharepoint Directory but cannot find sharepoint on my computer.
I have checked the regisrty as suggested elswehere and it does not
appear it is running Share point extensions. I have told it to check
the Extensions 2002 and says all is well. I do think this error 5 and
classes/.123 does somehow relate to Share point.
