Perhaps that is what you intended - for those 'not in the know' to
ignore you - but would you do the same physically?
Most people that I've encountered don't relate electronic activity to
real life in any noticeable way. You only have to read newsgroups to
know this. I can't remember the last boorish person I met in real life.
I had a graphic example of real/virtual differentiation yesterday when
trying to teach my 82-year old mother-in-law how to play the elementary
"Tanks" game on our new Wii. She had no idea what to do. I explained
that she had to shoot the "enemy" tanks, but she couldn't figure out
what to do. Specifically, she couldn't understand why she couldn't shoot
through a wall.
So I went and got my toy cap gun (bought to attract my dog's attention)
and asked her how she would go about shooting a tin can in our kitchen.
She had no problem working out that she had to move until she had line
of sight, aim the gun, pull the trigger (the bang scared the living ****
out of my dog, who was snoring contentedly in the corner of the
kitchen). Satisfied with a job well done, I sat her down at the game
again and said "Off you go then".
Her response? "What do I DO???"
Incidentally, I had my own problems with the tanks game; my friend Peter
always beat me. It was only after a while that I realised that his
strategy was to shoot ME with his first shot, then to polish off the
enemy tanks with me fuming on the sidelines. It's definitely a winning
strategy. This is one case where I've met people who behave the same way
in real life. It's known as the "Promotional Ladder game".
