New files overwritten by older????

On a laptop running Office XP with SP2 on XP Pro SP1 I
have an issue.

We had a server failure on Friday. The laptop has a
presistent connection to this server. This morning the
connection was disconnected and the new sevrer was
connected. The files were marked as make avaiable offline.

It appears that one spreadsheet was over written by the
older version on the network. Is this expected and if so
what work around is there. Is there a way to recover it
from the local system?
