New external DVD writer doesn't work

Last night i bought an LG SGA-5120D external dvd burner, because my laptop
does not have a dvd burner.

I connected the drive to my laptop through a USB cable but then a warning
message popped that read "HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB
Hub" so i used an IEEE 1394 cable instead. The dvd burner was connected and
installed but the problem is i couldn't burn dvds on the drive. when i go to
"My Computer" the name of the drive shows as "DVD-RAM Drive (E:)" and when i
insert a blank DVD-R or DVD+RW the name changes to "CD Drive (E:)" and when i
click it i get this message "Winows cannot read from this disk. The disk
might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with
windows" but the drive can still read music CDs.
and when i try burning movie files or any other files by going to the folder
and highlighting the file and selecting "Move this file" and choosing the new
drive i get the same message "windows cannot read from this disk. the disk
might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with
windows".
the weird thing is the drive can read music CDs and movie DVDs but when i
insert a blank DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW and click on the drive i get the error
message. and the drive is supposed to read and burn all types of media.

i don't know what to do, i re-installed the drive and ran the troubleshooter
and updated the anti-virus and ran it several times, and in the device
manager it tells me the drive is working fine.

sorry it took long, but i want to know if there is a way to fix this. and i
want to know if the problem is from my computer or the drive. Please help.

What burning software are you using?
The windows burning program cannot burn DVD's
Does it burn CD-R's ok?

Hi MAP.
Thank you for responding to my question.
I'm not using any software.
The drive does not burn CD-R's either.

What burning software do you suggest that i use in order to make sure that
the drive is working ?

My suggestion would be to install the software that came packaged with the
drive. It should have burning software included. It may also load any
required drivers for this drive.

Installing the software that came with your burner as RClifton suggests
would be a good idea,Also check these two settings in XP

1.Go to "my computer"and bring up the properties of the drive under the
recording tab be sure that their is a check in the box"enable CD recording
with this drive"

2. Open up Administrative tools and click on "services".
scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and be sure that it is set
either to manual or automatic.

If you get your drive working and it did not come with any burning software
you won't be able to burn DVD's only CD's I use "Nero" you can try it for 15
days free.
http://nero.com/us/index.html

One more thing that I just thought of is "power" The outputs on your laptop
may not provide enough power for the drive,if you have access to a "powered"
usb hub try that (I read about this in a newsletter," To all of the smart a_
_ out there NO I'm not talking about powering the burner but only the
connection between it and the computer") the warning you got about a high
speed device plugged into a non high speed usb hub means that you have usb
1.1 installed,The external drive will still work plugged into this but at a
slower rate than it could otherwise.

Good Luck

You can use USB cable and ignore the warning because USB 2 is backward compatible. Have you installed the drivers that came with the USB DVD-RW? You will need the drivers before your system can recognise a new device accurately. You must have a CD with the new drive which you need to insert in your CD drive. It does not have to be writeable. If you don't have any CD drives then you will need to download them and install them.

Hope this helps.
